Art is political. We seek to improve not only ourselves and our art, but the world as a whole. The first step towards that better world is an acknowledgement of past mistakes, and the decision to do better.
Reparations For Slavery
Black Lives Matter.
The crew of Monstrosity understands this country was built by slave labor as part of an ongoing atrocity dating back for hundreds years. We acknowledge the effects of slavery continue, with de facto slavery enforced by mass incarceration, police brutality, and a system designed to perpetuate racial inequalities.
Reparations are due.
We have two producers of Monstrosity, one of whom is Black. As such, the other producer will pay the half of the ticket price of any Black person who wishes to accept this as part of our ongoing effort at reparations. Further, half of any scholarship tickets offered will be reserved for Black people who wish to attend our events.
If you are a Black person who wishes to accept our reparations, please contact us for further details.
Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that what we now call Atlantic City was the home to the Lenape long before Europeans invaded this area. The guilt of this ongoing genocide and continued attempts to chip at their rightful sovereignty should never be forgotten nor accepted.
As part of this acknowledgement, we do not wish to accept any payment for our events from any Indigenous person: it is the least we can do to humbly invite you to our events to enjoy our services. While it does not make up for the crimes against Indigenous people, we cannot simultaneously acknowledge the bloody history of this land and then accept payment for the events we hold on it.
If you are an Indigenous person and want to attend one of our events, please contact us for further details. Please do not take advantage of this if you have no right to claim it. There is a long history of white settlers taking what is not theirs to claim- please do not add to it.
Scholarships
We live in a time of excessive financial inequality. While the reality of producing a larp means that we cannot make Monstrosity accessible to all, we will make every effort to reduce the inequality inherent to any professional endeavour. As such, for every 9 participants who pay for a ticket to Monstrosity, we will offer one scholarship ticket. A scholarship ticket has no cost to the participant: they can attend Monstrosity at no cost for the larp. While we cannot fully offset the price of attendance (which includes the costs of food and travel), we can at least eliminate the cost of lodging and participation.
To apply for a scholarship, please mark the appropriate box on the application (you have an option to apply only for a scholarship or apply with the intent to pay full cost if one is not available).
We determine scholarships using a weighted lottery. Half of our scholarships are reserved for Black applicants as part of our Reparations policy (Indigenous applicants who decide to use our Land Acknowledge do not count towards our scholarship numbers). The lottery is weighted to favor People of Color, Transgender people, and people who have accessibility needs. Individuals who receive a scholarship will be notified privately.
At no point will we ever reveal to the participants who is attending on a scholarship, or who is using our Social Justice Policy.
